Walpurgis Event

Walpurgis Event

A very cool geocoin issued for an event in Germany. Walpurgis Night is a holiday celebrated on April 30 or May 1 in parts of Northern Europe. The festival comes from Pagan traditions that celebrated the arrival of spring with large bonfires at night. Walburga -- an 8th century nun living in Germany -- became a saint on May 1, and therefore became mixed-up in the festival. Meanwhile, still in Germany, during this same two days the witches apparently gather on Brocken Mountain to do their own celebration in anticipation of Spring's arrival.

So there you have it: an old pagan festival with both witches and catholic saints thrown in the mix.
